AT PULMONARY ASSOCIATES WE BELIEVE IN THE IMPORTANCE OF REFRESHING AND RESTORATIVE SLEEP.  TO THAT END, WE OFFER A CLINIC FOR OUR SLEEP DISORDER PATIENTS TO SPEND TIME WITH OUR REGISTERED RESPIRATORY THERAPIST TO HELP PATIENTS BECOME AND REMAIN COMFORTABLE WHILE USING POSITIVE AIRWAY PRESSURE (PAP) DEVICES.  OUR RESPIRATORY THERAPIST IS AVAILABLE MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY 7:30AM-4:30PM AND IS HAPPY TO HELP TROUBLESHOOT BOTH OVER THE PHONE AND IN PERSON.  WITH OUR RESPIRATORY THERAPIST WORKING DIRECTLY WITH OUR SLEEP CERTIFIED PHYSICIAN, CHANGES ARE ABLE TO BE MADE QUICKLY TO YOUR DEVICE TO BOTH ENSURE COMFORT AND ADEQUACY OF YOUR TREATMENT.  WE ENCOURAGE OUR PATIENTS TO USE THIS RESOURCE, ESPECIALLY WHEN NEW TO PAP THERAPY AND NEEDING HELP ACCLIMATING.

WHAT IS AHI?  AHI STANDS FOR APNEA HYPOPNEA INDEX.  WHEN YOU WERE DIAGNOSED WITH A SLEEP DISORDER YOU UNDERWENT A SLEEP TEST THAT MEASURED YOUR AHI. 

LESS THAN 5 IS NORMAL

5-15 IS A MILD PROBLEM

15-30 IS A MODERATE PROBLEM

GREATER THAN 30 IS A SEVERE PROBLEM

THE GOAL OF TREATMENT IS TO BRING YOUR AHI DOWN INTO THE NORMAL RANGE OF LESS THAN 5.

 

WHAT IS COMPLIANCE?  YOU WILL HEAR THE TERM COMPLIANCE FROM BOTH YOUR DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT (DME) COMPANY AND OUR OFFICE.  YOUR INITIAL COMPLIANCE VISIT SHOULD BE SCHEDULED FOR 45 TO 90 DAYS AFTER YOU RECEIVE YOUR PAP DEVICE.  WHEN WE DOWNLOAD DATA FROM YOUR PAP DEVICE, WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE HOW OFTEN AND LONG YOU USE IT EACH NIGHT.  COMPLIANCE IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE YOUR DEVICE IS PAID FOR BY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY.  YOU ARE CONSIDERED TO BE COMPLIANT WHEN YOU:

WEAR YOUR PAP DEVICE FOR GREATER THAN 4 HOURS PER NIGHT 70% OF THE TIME

THIS TRANSLATES TO 5 OUT OF EVERY 7 DAYS

YOUR DME COMPANY MAY CONTACT YOU IF YOU ARE NOT WEARING YOUR MACHINE ENOUGH TO HAVE ADEQUATE COMPLIANCE, THEREFORE PUTTING IN JEOPARDY THE POSSIBILITY OF YOUR MACHINE BEING PAYED FOR BY INSURANCE.  IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE MEETING YOUR COMPLIANCE THRESHOLD PLEASE REACH OUT TO US SO THAT WE CAN HELP YOU MAKE THE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS TO HELP YOU BE SUCCESSFUL.  IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO MEET YOUR COMPLIANCE THRESHOLD AND DON’T REACH OUT TO US FOR HELP, THE DME COMPANY MAY HAVE TO ASK FOR YOUR DEVICE BACK.  WE WOULD PREFER THAT YOU GET THE TREATMENT YOU NEED SO THAT YOU CAN BE HEALTHY AND HAPPY.
